India produced 1.52 mill tonnes during 2007-08. Rajasthan produced highest quantity of green gram followed by Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu etc.

Fluctuations shown in area, production and productivity of green gram was observed in the past few years due variation in market rates, rain fall and other factors.
For example in AP green gram
  • Area decreased from 11.35 lakh Ac (4.54 lakh ha) in 2004-05 to 8 lakh Ac (3.20 lakh ha) in 2008-09
  • Production decreased from 1.92 lakh tonnes in 2007-08 to 1.36 lakh tonnes in 2008-09.
  • Productivity increased from 140 kg/Ac (351 kg/ha) in 2004-05 176 kg/Ac (439 kg/ha) in 2007-08
  • Market rates are playing main role in production of any agricultural commodity followed by weather.
